Many reports of young drivers killed behind the wheel have been linked to cell phone use. It is easy to think that inattentive driving is a youthful error. Sadly, the trend does not affect just the youth of today. The young, as well as the more seasoned motorists are all becoming more distracted when driving. Tragically, it is this dangerous trend that may have led to the deaths of two Louisiana women.
According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, the fatal accident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. when a car driven by a 75-year-old woman crossed the center line on South Tiger Bend Road. This caused the car to collide with another vehicle.

This time of year, highway construction projects begin to ramp up to take advantage of the warmer weather. With roadways under construction, motorists are reminded to slow down while traveling through construction zones.
Unfortunately, for the family of a 57-year-old old woman from Rustin, Louisiana and her 3-year-old grandson, reminders like this one didn't come soon enough. The two recently perished in a tragic car accident in an area near the border of Louisiana and Texas.

In response to findings that Baton Rouge's Government Street sees about twice as many car accidents on average as Louisiana's other undivided four-lane streets, the city's Metropolitan Planning Organization has hired a group of engineers to study the roadway and determine a possible solution.
According to a representative from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development's highway safety division, Government Street is currently classified as "abnormal" due to its higher-than-average crash rate.

Baton Rouge's Metro Council recently announced that it will consider settling a lawsuit concerning a car accident that left one woman with severe injuries. That woman filed a lawsuit following the accident, contending that a Baton Rouge police officer was responsible for injuring her and causing her to develop a painful medical condition. According to the current proposal, the Metro Council could settle the lawsuit outside of court for approximately $280,000.
The car accident at the center of the case occurred in 2007, when a captain with the Baton Rouge Police Department struck a car carrying the plaintiff and her husband. The rear-end collision caused the couple's car to be pushed forward into another vehicle. The lawsuit claims that the accident left both the woman and her husband injured. The officer retired from the Baton Rouge Police Department soon after the accident.

Sheriff's Deputies say they have arrested four teenagers suspected of causing a car accident that left a 44-year-old woman hospitalized. They claim the teenagers threw a large stone through the woman's windshield as she was driving. It is unclear whether they intended to injure the driver specifically.
According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, the car accident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. when the rock flew through the car's windshield, causing its driver to lose control of the vehicle. The car then exited the side of the road, traveled into a pasture and collided with a telephone pole. Police responded immediately to reports of a single car accident.

Relatives of four of the five people killed in a head-on crash have filed a lawsuit in response to the accident, naming the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development as a defendant, as well as the two drivers who were charged in the crash. The lawsuit, which was filed in a Baton Rouge court, claims the state should have been aware of the high rate of accidents at the site of the crash and taken appropriate action to prevent such occurrences.
Additionally, the suit alleges that the state should have also known that installing cable median barriers or conventional guardrails "would have greatly reduced the risk of and/or completely prevented" the fatal car accident. The state DOTD currently has plans in place to build over 20 miles of additional barriers to prevent crossover accidents.

The Louisiana State Police have arrested a woman for DWI a decade after she was convicted for her involvement in a 2002 drunk driving accident that left a toddler dead. She has been charged with having an open container of alcohol in her car, driving on the wrong side of the road and second-offense DWI. She was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, but is free on $7,000 bond.
Investigators say the car accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. when the 52-year-old collided with a tow truck as she traveled on the wrong side of the median. While the driver of the tow truck was unscathed by the wreck, the suspect sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital to receive treatment.

Louisiana's Department of Transportation and Development recently announced plans to improve safety around an area of Interstate 12 that has seen numerous crashes involving semi-trucks in recent weeks. The most recent truck accident was the third wreck involving an 18-wheeler in the area in February alone.
According to troopers with the Louisiana State Police, the most recent semi truck accident on I-12 occurred at around 2:30 a.m. when a truck driver attempted to change lanes at an unsafe speed, causing his vehicle to overturn onto construction barricades in the center of the highway. The truck blocked both eastbound and westbound traffic. Workers were able to return all lanes to working order by 9:30 a.m., according to the State Police. The driver was issued a citation for careless operation of a vehicle.

A police chief in Louisiana has issued a 30-day suspension for an officer that struck a car in East Baton Rouge Parish in 2011, after which he fled the scene. The chief said that the car accident occurred when the officer became impatient while driving his police cruiser. The officer then turned on his vehicle's emergency lights and attempted to pass another vehicle, clipping it in the process. The officer did not stop following the collision.
Witnesses were able to record the officer's license plate number and report the incident to his superiors. Investigators later found that the officer's dashboard camera revealed footage of the incident. All police dashboard cameras activate whenever a police vehicle's emergency lights are used. Although the accident did not result in injuries or death, the officer will be suspended for at least 30-days and face license suspension for engaging in unsafe driving and failing to stop after striking another vehicle.
